Kangaroo Island IV

Seal Bay (day 27)

Another windy day, but largely sunny though with wild weather warnings ahead. We set off for Seal Bay. This is around the central south coast on a good paved road all the way. You head back almost to Kingscote and then south to the coast.

Not long after our start we detoured to Kangaroo Island Living Honey Farm for a morning coffee and interesting learning session about the ligurian honey bees of the island. Even saw a koala swaying very precariously (though it seemed little concerned!) way up the top branches of a towering gum in the yard.

Interestingly, Seal Bay is all about sea lions - not often it is visited by the fur seals! Another meticulously maintained national park with fantastic interpretive boardwalks making it readily accessible for everyone.

I have labelled most of the pictures here. They were variously captured walking up and down the boardwalk - we did not head to the beach as there were very few sea lions on it and it was very windy.

There was (rare) movement on the dunes!

In no hurry

Once a young humpback ...

Likely to wake with a stiff neck.

Hmmm ... very deflated ...

Catching a point break!

Stranded, but unconcerned!

Then on our way home cross country on some of the unpaved roads that seemed like driving on cement (no dust) because they were so dry, we had the good fortune to spot a wedgetail eagle - it had actually been on the road enjoying some road kill so had not taken too high by the time I managed to get the camera into action.

A little further along as the weather was beginning to set in (the rain was LONG awaited and so welcome on the island and the mainland as well) we also were watched over by this vivid rainbow, and at one point were even able to see both ends. Quite a treat and another delightful end to another fascinating KI day.
